FERTILIZER AND WEED CONTROL

Our four application program has proven to be extremely effective. It consistently provides you with a green, weed free lawn.

What makes the Pro Landscape Maintenance four application program better?

First, we apply a fertilizer with EVERY application. Our granular applications are made using a coated, slow release fertilizer, and our liquid applications are made using a special water soluble, stabilized nitrogen. What does this all this mean? The nitrogen fertilizer we apply to your lawn is fed in slow, consistent doses over an extended period of time. Because of this, you get consistent green color and consistent growth rate over a period of about eight weeks, instead of a quick green up and rapid growth, followed by a quick fade out.

Second, we use additives in our liquid applications which helps the sprayed product adhere to the plant. The product stays where we place it which, and the chemical is better absorbed by the plant, resulting in extremely effective weed control.

Third, we apply the appropriate amounts of product for your turf. Not too much, not too little. All of our products are accurately measured during mixing, and monitored during applications to be sure your lawn is getting what it needs, and what we promised. After all, your lawn is our best advertising opportunity.

Application Schedule

  • Application one: Granular pre-emergent crabgrass control plus fertilizer (early spring - early summer.) The granules are coated to provide a slow release of fertilizer and herbicide. The granular product provides us with a long window of opportunity to treat crabgrass. We can make effective applications from very early spring until late spring/early summer. This application is made using special rotary/drop spreaders. Rotary spreading is done over the majority of the lawn, and drop spreading is done along edges of drives, walks, and curbs to ensure accurate placement of product.
  • Application two: Liquid broadleaf weed control and fertilizer (late spring – mid-summer). This application uses a solution of liquid herbicide and water soluble, stabilized nitrogen fertilizer that is sprayed onto the lawn. A special additive is also added to the liquid solution to help the herbicides and fertilizers adhere to the plants to ensure proper feeding and weed control. The stabilized nitrogen provides a slow consistent feeding of the turf. This application is made by walking the lawn using a hose end sprayer (large residential and commercial properties may be treated with a ride-on boom type sprayer). Our application techs are educated and trained to make applications only when proper conditions exist (not too windy or rainy), and to be mindful/careful around customers plants, gardens, pets, etc. If conditions are not right, we will cancel the application and schedule it for another day.
  • Application three: Liquid broadleaf weed control and fertilizer (mid-summer – early fall).
  • Application four: Granular winterizing fertilizer (early fall – late fall). This is a granular fertilizer application that is properly balanced to provide the turf with the proper nutrients it needs to store up for winter dormancy and early spring green the following season.
  • New Lawns: If your lawn has been recently seeded or sodded, we can provide a special “New Turf” program. This program will incorporate a “Starter” fertilizer. The “Starter” fertilizer contains the typical nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, but also adds phosphorous. Phosphorous is not typically added to fertilizers since it is actually banned for use in Minnesota. However, it is legal to use on a lawn that has been newly seeded or sodded, for a period of one year. The reason for this is that phosphorous promotes rooting, and experts know that the sooner turf is established, the sooner it reduces harmful runoff. We will evaluate your lawn and determine the appropriate applications to make and when to make them.
  • Lake Home and Cabin Owners: Did you know that studies show that a properly fertilized lawn can actually create less harmful runoff? Yes, it’s true! If a lawn is properly fertilized, it will create a thick and healthy turf that hold soils in place and allows fertilizers to be utilized, compared to a thin weak turf that allows for soils and fertilizers to runoff into lakes, streams, streets, storm drains, etc.
